When I was 14 years old  we had a 'free dress day' at school. I went to a private school with a strict uniform code so this was our chance to show off our weekend wardrobes. Much to my mother's horror I chose to wear an electric blue, short sleeved skivvy, a pair of brown-camouflage cargo pants and (this is the best bit), a pair of bright blue platform trainers, ala Baby Spice - just several years too late. I strutted into school that day like I was John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. The outfit was brand new (thanks dad!) and I felt like a million bucks. This look has been immortalised in a family portrait which now hangs in my parent's lounge room and acts as a reminder of my questionable fashion choices and my high self-esteem/obliviousness to high school bullying.

I've had my fair share of 'what is she wearing?' moments and I'm by no means a 'fashion person'. But I love fashion. I could stare at it for hours. Fashion for me is about self expression and the ability to change. It's what people see first - we choose every day to wear what we wear and to show each other what we're about.

Fashion is so interesting.

I must have watched The Devil Wears Prada and The September Issue at least 100 times and I obsess over all of the beautiful outfits and fashion events posted on Instagram by the likes of Anna Dello Russo, Rachel Zoe, Alexa Chung, Kelly Cutrone, Olivia Palermo, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and Sass and Bide.

I check for updates on style.com every single day. I love to lie in bed at night watching videos from the latest runway shows in Europe on my iPhone before flicking through images from the most recent store opening or brand launch in NYC or London.

But I've never been to Paris or to New York. My wardrobe is made up of 70% ASOS and 30% Cotton On. I haven't studied fashion but I have studied journalism.

I want to be a fashion writer. I write what I know and what I know right now is that I can poorly pronounce the names of French and Italian labels.

And so here is where I will learn me some fashion! Come on a journey with me - I'm going to attempt to teach myself all about fashion so that one day someone like me will read one of my stories on style.com.

That's all.
